From studying at BIMM, to international superstardom, The Kooks have come a long way since graduating from our flagship Brighton College.
After three chart-topping albums – including a certified quadruple platinum debut – the band are now back. The lads are currently on a massive international tour to promote their new greatest hits compilation, The Best Of… So Far.
Several lucky BIMM Berlin students recently had the chance to meet and perform with the band ahead of their huge sold-out show at the iconic Columbiahalle – a converted military air hangar in the heart of Berlin.
The meet and greet styled masterclass took place during the band’s soundcheck. Ever the gentleman, The Kooks’ frontman, Luke Pritchard, instantly made our students feel at home and was all too happy to answer questions about the band’s rise to superstardom and the music industry.
During the session, Luke offered plenty of advice and pointers for our aspiring musicians. The band even invited two of our students – Daniel Rivera de Ycaza and Lisa Uebel – up on stage to play the drums, a once in a lifetime opportunity for any music fan!
“It was really unexpected that I ended up playing the drums with The Kooks. It was an inspiring experience. What surprised me the most was their friendly personality and the good band chemistry they still have after all these years,” revealed Daniel.
Echoing his comments, Lisa also hailed the event as a real pinch yourself moment:
“It felt great hitting the drums on this huge stage, especially because the Kooks are one of my favourite bands. I’ve seen them playing on some festivals before, so it felt kinda surreal to perform a song with them. They were so easy going and gave me a lot of motivation,” she said.
It was fantastic to see some of our most successful ex-students sharing stories and inspiring a new generation of BIMM students.
Guest and Events Coordinator Christoph Borchers, who organised the event, said:
“Luke was so friendly and down to earth. He made the students feel really welcome and special. He chatted with them about their musical careers and courses, before showing them how it was done on stage.”
After the masterclass, a handful of students were given free tickets to the packed-out show in the very venue where they had joined the band earlier that day. As expected, The Kooks were spectacular and did not disappoint, playing a huge selection of hits from their extensive back catalogue, including their big hits ‘Naive’ and ’She Moves In Her Own Way’. It’s hard to believe Inside In / Inside Out is 11 years old when the songs sound so current and relevant.
All in all, both this was a truly memorable experience that our students will cherish for years to come. As for The Kooks, it’s great to see the boys back on stage and doing what they do best!
