Coronavirus Update

Updated 23rd April 2021

How we’re keeping our students and staff safe

BIMM Institute introduced strict measures and guidelines to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone, in advance of students returning to studies in September 2020.

Throughout Summer 2020, we developed detailed plans for each college, building and external venues, to ensure the appropriate measures were introduced to be able to safely welcome everyone back into the colleges and learning environments. Each college and external venue we use has undergone a detailed risk assessment and building schematics are in place with maximum room capacity, protective screens where appropriate, PPE stock and reporting procedures.

It is also important that our students understand their individual responsibility for keeping themselves and their peers safe. In order to make this as clear and simple as possible, we have developed and issued a COVID-19 Risk Assessment 2020/21 for Students which outlines responsibilities when on campus and these have been shared with students prior to their return, as well as being displayed around the buildings alongside our own commitment to their wellbeing.

We have developed teaching models for all our courses which offer a balanced onsite and remote learning experience, to ensure all students are able to engage safely and effectively with their chosen course, and experience the highest quality specialist music teaching and also onsite facility access for essential classes.

Our approach to learning and teaching will continue to be informed by the latest government guidance as we move through the coming months, and we also have plans in place to move teaching fully online when required during periods of national or localised lockdowns in either Berlin or Hamburg. Our fully online teaching model has also been available to students who may be self-isolating or unable to attend onsite classes due to travel restrictions.

We are in close and regular contact with the German health and education authorities and closely monitor developments to ensure that we are adhering to the latest guidelines. For information on current travel restrictions please see the latest information here for updates.

Our creative community spirit remains strong. Together, our students have launched several innovative initiatives to keep the music playing. We will continue to keep everyone fully informed in terms of the steps we are taking to ensure your admissions process is as smooth and efficient as possible.

Return to the facilities

The current lockdown restrictions are in place until at least the 9th of May, as there is some uncertainty over what level of restrictions will be in place beyond this date, we are making plans to ensure consistency, safety, and for the student experience.

To provide certainty for our students, all assessments for Semester 2 were moved online. This approach will minimise any potential disruption to the assessment preparations regardless of what restrictions may be in place between now and the summer.

While teaching could not be conducted on campus during the lockdown, rehearsal and studio spaces were opened for student access, within the current guidance, and this will continue throughout the summer.

Access during the summer

Our primary focus is on enabling students to progress through their degree in a timescale that doesn’t compromise their progression, whether that be to the next academic level or into the industry.

We do recognise however that our students have not had as much access to our facilities as they might in normal circumstances.

Normally this access would end when the course completes in May. If government guidance allows, we will extend access to the college facilities beyond May and into the summer break. Lessons and assessments will have already completed by this point; so access should be plentiful.

Provision for 2021 Graduates

In addition, we recognise that students graduating this summer might appreciate further support than normal as they transition into the industry.

In response to this need, we are putting together a suite of benefits that can be accessed for 12 months after the course completes.

These will include:

  • Practice Room access
  • 1-2-1 Careers support tutorials
  • Careers suooirt group workshops and seminars
  • 1-2-1 Tutorials with subject tutors
  • Access to BIMM’s online services, including Office 365 and BIMM Connect
  • Access to all BIMM’s online masterclasses

We are grateful to our staff and students for their patience as we work through the complex and challenging situation we all find ourselves in.

Coronavirus FAQs

As always, we are here to help answer any questions you have or provide more information on BIMMs response to the Coronavirus pandemic. For applicants

During this time, we have initiated a series of online experiences and events to help you get the information you need to study at BIMM Institute.

During our Virtual Open Day events, we give a presentation on all the key facts about BIMM Institute. We’ll look at our courses, teaching methods, tutors, graduate successes, employability, student services, as well as the city and culture of Berlin and Hamburg so you can gain a clear picture of life as a student.

The Virtual Open Day will be completely tailored to your needs, and you can engage in a Q&A session with our Admissions Team. You can ask about anything from student accommodation, fees, the application process or the logistics of applying for a study visa.

An audition or interview is required for entry to all BIMM Institute courses. Therefore, we have established remote auditions and interviews to make it as straightforward as possible for all applicants to continue their academic journey.

If you have selected a face-to-face (on-campus) audition or interview within your application, then our Admissions team will have reached out to you to rearrange this to be completed remotely. This will not impact the quality of the feedback you will receive from our academic staff who review all auditions and interviews. We also realise that having an on-campus audition or interview is a good opportunity to visit our colleges and see our facilities. We will resume this service once Health Authority ordinance allows us to do so and contact all applicants when these are available again. This means you will still be able to visit us at a future point without impacting your application progress.

If you would like more information about booking a remote audition or interview, please contact our Admissions Team via email at admissions@bimm-institute.de, by phone on +49 30 311 99 186 or LiveChat. You can find out more about auditions and interviews at BIMM Institute here.

We understand that it is a challenging time for all students who are working hard towards their high-school and college qualifications, and who may continue to be unsure about how those qualifications will be awarded in the summer. But there is no need to put your life on hold to delay your next steps in your educational journey. BIMM Institute Berlin and Hamburg facilities are open to students, staff and our teaching faculty when Health Authority ordinance allows, and we have been delivering a mixture of on-campus and online learning to our new and returning cohorts from September 2020.

BIMM Institute has always been a creative community and, as such, we place a great deal of emphasis on the audition and interview element of your application, as your creative ability and goals are at the heart of our curriculum. Due to ongoing C-19 disruption, it may be the case that your Government plans to reschedule your exams which could impact your completion of these and when you will receive your results. If so, we encourage you to contact us and let us know if you are likely to be impacted by this so we can best advise you on the next steps, and not disrupt your journey to study at BIMM Institute.
