BIMM Brighton has officially partnered with Brighton Electric Studios in a move that gives our students the unique opportunity to get real, hands-on experience in one of the UK’s most renowned music studios.
Brighton Electric is an award-winning music studio complex that’s been a core part of the local and national music scene since it was founded in 2000. In 2016, it won the ‘Studio of the Year’ award by Pro Sound News Magazine. The complex features 17 practice studios and two high-end recording studios, as well as a plethora of mix studios, storage facilities, a shop, cafe and a mastering suite. If you are a tech geek you will have the opportunity to get your hands on some amazing hardware including the exquisite vintage Neve 5316 console in Studio 1 and the API 1608 automated console in Studio 2.
In fact Brighton Electric is more than just a recording and rehearsal studio, it is a bespoke experience where students will be able to enjoy and learn their craft.
Matt Hodson MA is the Course Leader for BA(Hons) Music Production at BIMM Brighton. He says:
“The partnership with Brighton Electric will give our students the opportunity to work in one of the best studios in the country. They’ll get to use highly sought-after equipment in a professional environment while benefiting from the extensive knowledge of both their tutors and the engineers within the studio. Instead of giving students a fictitious studio experience – we’re giving them the real thing.”
“There are also opportunities for students to be credited on a BIMM album production, which is great for their portfolio”.
Over the years, Brighton Electric has hosted many prominent artists, many of whom have produced critically acclaimed work and enjoyed worldwide success. The Cure, Florence Welsh, Foals and Royal Blood are just some of the renowned musicians who have recorded at Brighton Electric.
James Stringfellow, the Director of Brighton Electric, is delighted to be helping students reach their full potential:
“Primarily, Brighton Electric is a great place for BIMM students to learn as we are a real, commercially functioning facility. We provide an array of services and the students can get to know the team and genuinely feel a part of what we do here.”
“We pride ourselves on having the most exciting gear and we love helping budding BIMM producers achieve their potential when it comes to studio recording. Each year group has its own stars, and many students even end up working for us in various capacities”.
Aside from getting the first-hand experience of working in a real recording studio, students will have the opportunity to work with their peers, as Matt Hodson explains:
“One of the key elements within any of our BIMM Institutes is making sure we connect students from across a number of courses. We put songwriters and musicians into the studio with the Music Production students on a weekly basis, providing a meaningful relationship for them. The students get to see the vision of the recording from demo to final production – they get that all-important studio experience and walk away with a production.”
