It’s Monday and we’ve just about gotten over the joyous musical madness that was Great Escape Festival 2019. How about some brand new music to help kick your Monday off? Our track of the week comes from BIMM London alt fuzz four-piece ‘D’Haze’. This is ‘Black Widow’.
What inspired you when writing this track?
Hazel: Even though the lyrics are deep and emotional it is NOT a love song. It’s about being trapped in a feeling of complete attraction for someone and not being able to get out of it.
Were there any particular musical influences while you were writing?
Hazel: We don’t usually focus on influences when we write together, since it’s more of a feeling the moment kind of thing.
Kevin: This song sort of reminds me of some early pink Floyd fuzz tones.
Is there anything you do to try and make your music stand out?
Hazel: Energy is the key, probably for the four of us, with noticeable differences in dynamics to take the listener on a journey.
Kevin: I’m trying to get some recognisable guitar tones and licks, building a kind of identity with my sound.
How did your songwriting process work?
Hazel: Black Widow comes from a jam over a simple guitar motif from Kevin who was playing around with his pedalboard. Marcus our bassist added some harmonics with the bass and I got hooked.
William: I tried to apply a very ambient drum part for what Kevin was doing and we built the rest from there.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
William: Mystical, explosive, powerful.
Hazel: Old School, loud, catchy.
Kevin: Dream clean fuzz.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
Hazel: Being in Songwriting has helped me overcome writers block and trust my musical mind a lot more than I did when I was on the Vocals Diploma. I’m no longer just a performer, I’m also a musician.
William: Playing with a lot of different people made me learn how to have a wider palette of sounds and gave me ways to express myself through my instrument.
What’s your favourite thing about BIMM?
Hazel: Getting to meet so many people and nourishing your ears with their music.
Anything exciting coming up you can share?
We have just released our debut EP “The Party” so we are currently gigging to promote it. But we are going to start writing the next one, with plenty of new bangers coming!
