Launa - You Make Me

Track of the Week

It’s Monday and that means one thing, it’s time for Track of the Week.

Take a listen to the debut single from BIMM Brighton Songwriter Launa – this is ‘You Make Me’.

What inspired you when writing this track?
I was inspired to write this track after experiencing quite a difficult relationship with a friend and I just felt like I needed to escape and break free. So, I decided to write this song as a way to build my confidence up to leave the friendship, which makes the track really personal.

Were there any particular music influences while you were writing?
Whilst writing the track, I made sure to listen to a variety of pop music, but I feel my main influences came from artists such as Sigrid and Sia, as I really love their upbeat melodies blended in with honest lyricism!

Is there anything you do to try and make your music stand out?
I always try and make sure to tell a story within my music, as it makes it easier for an audience to connect to the song, and I feel that tying this in with my vocal and top-lining skills helps to set my music apart.

How did your songwriting process work?
I firstly started off with creating a word bank which focused around the central theme of feeling ‘stuck’ in a situation, and I picked out my favourite words to use later for writing the lyrics. After this, I then went on to create a melodic top-line for my chorus, and from this I created the verse, pre-chorus and bridge melodies. Then, referring back to my word bank, I wrote the lyrics for each section, and lastly applied chords to the piece before taking it to my producer, Jomo Kru!

Describe your sound in 3 words…
Upbeat, vibrant and fun!

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
It’s given me the tools and resources to be able to find likeminded individuals to create music with. As well as this, the expert teaching and masterclasses have been extremely useful during my time at BIMM, as it’s always great to learn about different topics from industry professionals themselves.

What’s your favourite thing about BIMM?
It would have to be the Live Showcase, as I love having the opportunity to be able to perform my music to a live audience and to also discover new artists.

Anything exciting coming up you can share?
Yes, I do have some exciting news! I’ve recently found out that I will be performing at The Great Escape Festival as part of the Spinnup Showcase at The Tempest Inn on May 9th, and I’m really excited to be sharing the stage with some incredibly talented artists!
