It’s a new week, which means it’s time for our Track Of The Week. This time around, we’re loving the smooth and soulful grooves of BIMM Dublin troupe, ToyGirl. This is ‘Reign’.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
The lyrics from Reign were inspired by how I felt as a young woman facing a new and drastic stage of life. In terms of the melody and stylistic choices I made, I took a lot of my inspiration from ELIZA and Elli Ingram.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Alice Phoebe Lou is a massive inspiration to all of us in so many ways. Eliza has also been a big influence for me as a vocalist.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I believe that having a French/English element to our music helps us to stand out from the crowd. Above all, the way we click as friends and as musicians has been beneficial in so many ways and gives us an edge, especially during our performances.
How does your songwriting process work?
As a lyricist, my songwriting comes quite sporadically and can happen in many ways. I sometimes will sit down with a guitar riff that Ciaran and/or Fiachra have come up with and then see where that takes me. Other times, we’ll write the instrumental section first (everything bar the vocal) and I’ll go and write over that. There have been a few cases where I have made short instrumental loops on GarageBand using samples and have built a song from that. Our songwriting process changes slightly every time we write.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Vulnerable, sentimental and moody.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
BIMM has helped me have an in depth understanding of the Music Business which is essential to have the best chance at being a successful musician. I have also learned a lot about my own instrument, how versatile it is and how to look after it.
What’s next for you?
The next step for us is recording and writing new material! We’ve been so busy making our first single, so we’ve had very little time to write!
