AKCADAMY

Band

Five-piece hip-hop band, Akcadamy, are rapper Adam C, songwriter KC Davies, bassist Liam Johnson, guitarist James Frankland and drummer Aaron Haigh. Formed at BIMM Manchester by Adam C and KC via a shared love of the same musical influences, the band are a prime example of how networking with fellow students at BIMM can lead to great things.

Eager to concoct a fresh, unique vibe of hip-hop using melodic hooks and unique guitar riffs, the duo wasted no time in setting up as an acoustic act, performing regularly at open mic nights across Manchester. Realising that if they wanted to fill larger venues they’d need a fuller sound, they grabbed a selection of other BIMM Manchester students to help them out, and the rest is history!

Industry professionals came to see them perform at the BIMM Manchester End-of-Term gig and booked them for Headlander Festival at Stockport RUFC later that year. Word quickly spread about their distinctive mix of soul, live music and hip-hop. They landed themselves a manager and shortly afterwards secured a support slot for groundbreaking Brighton-based drum ‘n’ bass band, The Qemists, who are fronted by ex-BIMM Brighton student, Olly Simmons.

The band has performed across all corners of the country in venues including the Union Chapel in London, Parr Street Studios in Liverpool and Etihad Stadium in Manchester. They’ve become a festival favourite, playing at Warrington Music Festival, Liverpool Sound City, Rock the Farm Festival in Hereford, the Manchester International Tattoo Show, Brighton’s The Great Escape and the Glass Butter Beach Festival in Abersoch, Wales.

The band’s music continues to grow and evolve and they’re not afraid to experiment with the view to improving their live shows. They now regularly feature BIMM Manchester vocalist Romario Bryan – a fantastic artist in his own right who recently supported soul singer Alexander O’Neal at Sheffield’s O2 Academy.

Akcadamy state that their main goal is “to be original and make relatable music that has heart, passion, ferocity and no holds barred brilliance”. Here at BIMM we’re fully behind their ambition… so much so, in fact, that we invited them to play at the very first Open Day for BIMM Berlin. And we’re not the only ones to be singing their praises, with Sony A&R man Mike Pickering calling them “the real deal” and many music blogs commending them and reposting their music. They’re definitely ‘ones to watch’ and we expect you’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the very near future.
