Your BIMM songwriting course will teach you far more than toplines and earworms. Our expert tutors are here to give you the specialist knowledge, invaluable contacts and multi-faceted skill set to unlock every door in the modern music industry.

Perhaps you see yourself as a gun-for-hire, supplying hits to the world’s top artists. Maybe you’ve got a head full of hooks but need help to turn them into a world-beating single. You might dream of establishing yourself as a composer for TV and film, or honing your craft as the writer for your own band. Whatever ambition brings you to BIMM, our comprehensive courses are laser-focused on bringing your composition skills and business abilities beyond the levels that employers demand.

This is BIMM. You’d expect the most respected tutors and highest levels of modern music tuition. But your songwriting course doesn’t end in the class room. Study at any of our eight international colleges and you’ll dive deep into the BIMM community, enjoying a life full of music as you and your peers collaborate on projects, share the studio and hit the town.

If songwriting is your passion, then BIMM is your launchpad. Take your first step.

WHAT TO EXPECT

All killer. No filler. BIMM’s songwriting courses are structured to help you develop as an artist and industry professional. Every step of the way, you’ll be guided by our expert tutors – all current and respected figures with years of expertise to pass on. But that doesn’t mean you can’t go off the map, with a varied curriculum designed to prep’ your skill-set for employment.

In the modern industry, the test of any great song is how it goes down live. As such, you’ll spend plenty of time onstage in the Live Performance Workshop module, tightening your songcraft, learning what makes an audience tick and finding your identity as a performer. Back in the class room, you’ll complement those experiences with tailored tuition in Songwriting Techniques, Creative Processes, Theory, Writing For Digital Media, Commercial Music Songwriting, Cultural Perspectives – and more.

Our courses are both academically and musically challenging, providing the perfect balance between practical and technical skills, theory and analysis. When you’re not scribbling down your next killer chorus, you’ll be exploring and developing potential career pathways through research and professional projects, or learning the vital business skills that drive the modern industry.

You’ll want to plug into one-of-a-kind networking opportunities and collaborate with like-minded fellow musicians during your time on the course. And that couldn’t be easier, with access to the BIMM Connect service letting you hook up fast with fellow student bandmates, songwriting collaborators, press agents, artist managers and event promoters.

One size doesn’t fit all – so BIMM’s songwriting course puts you in control, tailoring the content to hit your own personal targets. Some students will max out their CV with a choice of optional modules including Studio Recording, Critical Listening, Music Teaching Practice and Online Music. Others will diversify their skill-set with our five-week, mid-term BIMM Extra mini modules: choose from areas as varied as Music Production, Photoshop and Video Editing, Mindfulness Techniques, Essay Writing Skills, Entrepreneurship – and more.

Masterclasses

At BIMM, you’ll learn from the best. Alongside our industry-leading tutors, BIMM’s regular masterclasses get you up close and personal with the songwriters at the top of the tree. But don’t come to a BIMM masterclass expecting autographs and hot air. Our A-list guests are here to share their hard-won knowledge, offer up their brains for picking, give you the career hacks you won’t find in any textbook and guide you around the pitfalls.

MORE THAN JUST A PERFORMANCE COURSE

It takes many qualities to make a songwriter. BIMM will help you develop from a raw talent to a midas-touch composer, but the course goes much further. By the time you graduate, you’ll have the complete skill-set you need to hit the ground running and make your mark in the industry – thanks to hundreds of opportunities beyond your day-to-day teaching.

Bring your pen, pad and instrument. But expect to use your head at BIMM, too, on a degree or diploma that covers a range of academic modules including Applied Music Business, Artist Development and Entrepreneurship, Cultural Perspectives and Research Methods.

You’ll realise just how much you’ve learned during the Professional Project that concludes your degree, fusing all the knowledge you’ve acquired at BIMM. From there, the industry is your oyster as you officially launch your career in whichever direction you choose.

What Our Students Say

Carl North : BIMM Manchester

Having always written songs it was kind of a natural progression, though I spent a number of years working before this saying I wasn’t good enough, but it kept nagging at me till I decided to apply and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s a great course, it challenges you and pushes you constantly in the best way, which for someone as lazy as me is a good thing! I’ve written more in the last year or so than I have in my life and you can really see the improvement, I also didn’t realise how much there was to songwriting and the craft of it.

Not only that but coming to Manchester from a smaller town was one of the best things, allowing me to get involved in a scene much bigger than what I was used to, it was daunting but totally worth it!
