BIMM University Berlin launches a new master’s degree

15 February, 2021

Here at BIMM University Berlin, we’re delighted to announce the addition of a brand-new degree to our already exciting range of contemporary music courses – and this time it’s aimed at graduates!

The postgraduate MA Popular Music Practice will be available to study at BIMM University Berlin from September 2021 – either as one-year full-time or two-year part-time courses – allowing BIMM University Berlin graduates the opportunity to continue to explore their musical interests with BIMM. And not just that… the master’s course is open to graduates from all over the world – you just need an existing degree to apply.

This innovative course allows you to choose one of four specialist pathways – performance, production, composition or entrepreneurship – making it suitable for students of all disciplines and backgrounds who are looking for an opportunity to hone their craft under the guidance of BIMM University Berlin’s expert lecturers.

Fully accredited by BIMM University Berlin, the course is specially designed to progress in line with your personal career aspirations and involves a large amount of collaboration with students from other study pathways and external industry stakeholders.

Focusing on both academic theory and research, you’ll be encouraged to investigate areas of music including performance and composition; popular musicology; the music industry and entrepreneurship; and the application of technologies to practice. The course will culminate in a major project – an extended piece of work exploring your chosen area of specialisation.

Across your research work, you’ll be guided by a BIMM University Berlin expert in your chosen field, attending regular one-to-one meetings, plus lectures and seminars with students from other disciplines, and workshops with those from your own field.

BIMM University Berlin College Principal, Anna Marks, says she’s hugely excited about the addition of the postgraduate programme to Institute’s existing courses:

“The MA Popular Music Practice is a unique course in its interdisciplinary, collaborative, and practice-as-research approach.  As there are full and part-time study options, it is suitable for existing undergraduate students to continue their journey with us into postgraduate education and offers the opportunity for professionals already working in the industry to enhance their practice in the field. We are excited for students to join the research community of the BIMM group and to see the creative and academic projects that are developed throughout the MA.”

The addition of the postgraduate degree to the college’s already impressive list of courses is yet another example of BIMM University Berlin’s continued growth and achievements. We’re a global hub of learning, currently hosting students from 51 different countries – from Spain to Slovenia, the US to the UK, Finland, Malaysia and, of course, Germany. Our location in Berlin’s artistic Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district – itself a central cog in the European music scene – sees BIMM University Berlin students become citizens of a truly international city, and you’ll be bound to create lifelong global connections during your stay.
