English Language Requirements

BIMM Institute requires that your English Language capability is of a level that will enable you to succeed on your chosen course of study.

All applicants are required to demonstrate their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English. We have therefore English language requirements based on the following minimum standards.

For our undergraduate courses, we accept the following  English Language exams:

Test can be taken online or in centre

Written (Listening, Reading, Writing) and Spoken tests with a minimum score of 25 in each skill B2 Pass
European Baccalaureate English language (mother tongue) pass Grade 6 (80%) EL
International Baccalaureate Higher-level in English language at a minimum of Grade 4 or Standard Level in English at a minimum of Grade 5 HL 4, SL 5
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic version

We may be able to accept IELTS Indicators taken from 1st July 2020 onwards 

No less than 5.5 in each element: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing Min. 6.0 overall
TOEFL (iBT)

We do not accept TOEFL ITP tests available in China

17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking and 17 in Writing Min. 80 overall
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) No less than 42 in each element -CEFR B2 Min. 50 overall
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) 165 in each component 170 overall
Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE) 165 in each component 170 overall

 

Some certificates are valid for 2 years from the date they were issued. If your certificate does not have expiry terms, please note that Admissions Teams will apply discretion to determine whether the new test is required, depending on your circumstances.

The following English Language Tests will be accepted exceptionally as evidence of an applicant’s English language proficiency, due to Covid-19 closures of English Language Centres. Please contact admissions@bimm-institute.de prior to booking your test: 

  • TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition
  • LanguageCert International ESOL (B2 Communicator Level) Online
  • Academic IELTS Indicators taken from 1st of July 2020

Exam scores requirements are presented in the table above.

LanguageCert exams can be taken online from any location (e.g. at home). Results are available in 3 business days. For more information about how to book the test, please visit the LanguageCert website.

If you have studied an alternative external English language qualification, please contact admissions@bimm-institute.de to confirm if this can be accepted.


 

We can accept Secondary School qualifications from the following countries, should the applicant have completed a qualification listed at a required level, as per the table below:

Austria Award of Reifeprufung /Matura awarded from a Allgemeinbildende Hohere Schule with a minimum grade of 2/ Gut on the English component to meet English Language requirements.
Bulgaria Award of Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie (after 4 years of study) – grade of 5 in English component to meet English Language requirements.
Croatia Award of Svjedodzba o Maturi after four years of study with a minimum grade of 5 in English component to meet English Language requirements.
Denmark Award of Studentereksamen – English language grade 7 on the STX, HF, HHX or HTX to meet English Language requirements.
Estonia Award of Gumnaasiumi loputunnistus orRiigieksamitunnistuswith – English language requirements are met with a School Exam grade of 4 OR English State Examination at 75% or above to meet English Language requirements.
Finland Award of Ylioppilastutkinto or studentexamen after three years of study – English at a minimum grade of Eximia cum laude approbatur or 6 as a second official language to meet English Language requirements.
France We can accept English at 12 for those who have studied Option Internationale Anglais on the Baccalaureat General.
Germany Award of minimum grade of 10 on the English component (Leistungsfach) on the Abitur.
Hungary Award of Erettsegi Vizsga or Matura – grade 4 or above in English at Advanced Level; OR 5 at Basic level exam.
Iceland Award of Stúdentspróf (Matriculation Certificate) – grade of 9 in the English component.
Ireland Award of ILC with a minimum of C1/C/O4 in English Standard Level.
Latvia Award of Atestats par Visparejo videjo Izglitibu (Certificate of General Secondary Education) – Grade 8 in English Language component.
Lithuania Brandos Atestatas – a grade of 8 in English language to meet English language requirements.
Malta The Matriculation Certificate Examination and grades CC at Advanced Level, to include having consistently studied in the English language and obtained a 1–5 in English language on the Secondary Education Certificate.
The Netherlands Award of VWO after six years of study – 8.0 in English Language.
Norway Award of Vitnemal fra den Videregaende Skoleas – grade of 4 in the English component.
Poland Matura – English Language Extended level at 70%.
Sweden Avgangsbetyg/Slutbetyg fran gymnasieskolan – A grade C/VG will need to be obtained on the English C/7 component OR a C/VG on both English A/5 AND B/6 component.
UK GCSE Grade C or above in English Language.
Australia English Grade C on the Year 10 Certificate/ Junior Secondary Studies Certificate/ English VHA, HA or SA on the Year 10 Certificate/ SACE English Pass/ English Credit,Higher Pass or Pass on the School Certificate (TCE)/ English Pass in Unit 3 or 4 on the VCE/ WACE – Pass in English on the Certificate of Lower Secondary Studies (CLSS).
Canada Grade 11 Secondary School English language grade at C or an equivalent.
USA HSD – C in Grade 12 English.

For the MA Popular Music Practice course, applicants require approved English language qualification with an overall score of Higher B2 on the CEFR scale. English language qualifications accepted by BIMM Institute and the specified grades are presented in the table below:

Applicant has studied and successfully completed an academic qualification at least equivalent to a UK Bachelors Degree taught in a majority English-speaking country. If the qualification was taught in an MES country (excluding Canada)
