BIMM University Berlin announces this year’s Scholarship winner

11 November, 2021

Every academic year we offer a number of bursaries and a scholarship to our talented applicants. This year at BIMM University Berlin, we have set up an outstanding scholarship with our partner Music Pool Berlin, dedicated to supporting one lucky student. We are delighted to announce that this year’s scholarship winner is India Walczuch.

The scholarship includes having access to Music Pool Berlin’s wide range of workshops and networking opportunities.  Kirsten Grebasch from Music Pool Berlin added:

“We are delighted to partner with BIMM University Berlin for their scholarship this year. Since 2013, Music Pool Berlin has been a publicly funded non-profit consulting service for musicians in Berlin. We offer workshops, consulting and networking in community evenings on all relevant topics related to the music business.

We can offer India the possibility to  participate in regular sessions with our Music Pool consultants, which are not so much about the artistic, but the administrative part of being a musician. Social insurance, promotion, booking, and so much more. India will also be invited to perform at our next Artist Meetup and meet other musicians from the Music Pool community. But for now, we wish India a great start to her studies at the BIMM University Berlin and look forward to seeing her at Music Pool.”

Getting to know India Walczuch, our scholarship winner:

We caught up with India to find out more about her journey in music and what she is most looking forward to at BIMM University Berlin:

Why did you choose to study at BIMM University Berlin?

I chose BIMM University Berlin because I knew that I would find inspiration in my fellow students and lecturers who have worked in the music industry for a long time. I like the concept of BIMM University Berlin, where one finds space and freedom for diversity while focusing on mental health and well-being. The university offers excellent networking support and education on everything going on inside and around the music industry.

What made you choose Berlin as a place to study?

I used to visit Berlin before because my aunt and uncle live here. Every time I was blown away by its cultural diversity and tolerance that gave people a place to express themselves in all kinds of creative fields. The liberty and atmosphere of Berlin inspire me. It is not a myth that Berlin is one of Europe’s most exciting music destinations, so I thought there could be no better place to study music.

Why music? Can you talk about your journey so far?

My musical journey started as a six-year-old when I couldn’t decide which instrument I would like to play. I ended up taking piano lessons, which was one of the best decisions I ever made. Outside of school, I spent most of my time in our local music school playing the piano, singing in the choir, or studying music theory. It was a place where I felt at ease and where my passion for music could flourish.

In 2020, I bought my first DAW and started to learn how to produce. This new facet of music creation changed how I looked at music and helped me better understand, even though I still have a long way to go. Later that year, I moved to Berlin and finally had the opportunity to meet other artists and release my first single with their help and advice, right on time for my application to BIMM University Berlin.

What are you most looking forward to during your studies?

BIMM University Berlin will provide me with a better understanding of the music industry and will help me develop the ability to run a business. Being an artist, working in a creative area always means one has to understand entrepreneurship. In the future, I want to be able to create and be confident about it. I hope to find my path as an artist and to set foot in the door of today’s music industry.

What are you most looking forward to during your scholarship and the Music Pool workshops and networking opportunities?

I believe that talent alone is not enough if one is not willing to work hard. I am looking forward to all the opportunities this scholarship provides to improve my artistry. Networking is key in the music industry, and that is why I am very grateful for the chance to get help and advice on networking from experienced people.
