BIMM World Cup 2025: rain, goals and glory at our Essex campus

15 July, 2025

Earlier this month, the eyes of the BIMM community turned to our Essex campus, proud host nation of the 2025 BIMM World Cup.

What began life as a friendly football match between students in Birmingham quickly gained momentum. By 2023, the tournament had expanded to include teams from multiple UK campuses, and in 2024, Berlin claimed its second consecutive title, officially establishing itself as the team to beat.

Now in its fourth year, the competition has become a hotly anticipated fixture in the BIMM calendar—and this year marked its biggest edition yet. What started as a small event has grown into a full-scale, cross-campus tournament celebrating sport, creativity, and camaraderie.

With over 120 players, three simultaneous tournaments, and a very British mix of sunshine and torrential rain, the 2025 tournament delivered everything we’ve come to expect: fierce competition, spectacular goals and a few questionable tackles.

Men’s tournament: Bristol ends Berlin’s reign

Eight teams, one trophy—and Berlin arrived confident, sporting shirts with two stars to mark their back-to-back titles. But confidence wasn’t enough. After falling at the semi-final stage, the reigning champions were left watching from the sidelines as Essex and Bristol battled it out in a dramatic final.

An early own goal handed Bristol the advantage, but Essex fought their way back to level it at 3–3, taking us to penalties. Under pressure, Bristol held their nerve and claimed their first ever BIMM World Cup crown—sending the away fans into raptures and officially ending Berlin’s reign.

Women’s tournament: Brighton blaze through

Squads from Berlin, Brighton, and a united team from London, Manchester, and Birmingham took to the pitch. Brighton, fittingly, shone the brightest, seeing off strong opposition and ultimately beating Berlin 3–0 in a rain-drenched final.

The standard of play was outstanding, and the atmosphere electric, setting the stage for what’s sure to be a key feature of future tournaments.

Staff tournament: Central Marketing make history

At long last, BIMM staff had their shot at glory—and they didn’t waste it. With teams from Manchester, Essex, London/Birmingham, and Central Marketing, the inaugural staff tournament brought passion, pride, and a surprising amount of goalkeeping flair.

Central Marketing surged to a 4–2 win over Essex in the final, earning both bragging rights and the honour of being crowned our first-ever staff champions. The phrase ‘career highlight’ was overheard more than once…

Huge thanks to our incredible hosts Danielle and Sam in Essex, the coaches, organisers, and every campus team who made the day possible.

The BIMM World Cup continues to grow year on year—a testament to the energy, creativity, and connection across our global community. Whether you’re in it for the medals, the memes, or just the post-match snacks, there’s no denying the spirit of the game is alive and well at BIMM.

See you next year. You’ve got 12 months to regroup, retrain, and challenge for the crown. Good luck!
