Student wellbeing

Here’s what BIMM student wellbeing has to offer.

Studying is one of the greatest adventures you can embark upon: you’re meeting new people, learning new things and, in many cases, getting to know a new place. Here’s what BIMM student support has to offer.

While studying can be exciting, you may also find yourself dealing with questions, emotions or challenges you did not expect to face.  That’s why all our students have access to a powerful support network that is there to give you a helping hand whenever you should need it.

Whether you want to give your study skills a boost, have questions about your course, or need support with your mental or physical health, our team are always here to offer confidential support and guidance.

You’re never alone when you’re at BIMM University Berlin. Our community makes sure of that.

Having concerns about your studies? Our Learning Support is on hand to help.

We work with you on a one-to-one basis to best accommodate your learning and individual needs. Whether organising assistance with academic writing, implementing strategies for maintaining study routines, or accessing learning tools, no question is too great for our team.

Should you need it, our team will also work with you to put together an Individual Support Plan to help ensure you have a positive and barrier-free learning experience.

Music Marketing, Media and Communication students at BIMM

Your wellbeing is our top priority. During all the highs and lows, we are here to support you throughout your studies.

All students have access to counselling with their college’s dedicated Student Wellbeing Team. With members of the team specialising in Mental Health First Aid; they are your first point of call for confidential guidance.

Whether you want to talk to them about your mental health, homesickness, money worries, housing, relationships, personal issues, stress management or just need to offload, they can offer the guidance you need or support you in getting additional professional support.

BIMM University Berlin Work Experience - two students laughing

We work hard across all areas of BIMM University Berlin to make our environments, policies and practices inclusive.

Disability can mean many things to many different people and can range from long-term medical conditions (including medically recognised mental health difficulties like anxiety disorder or depression), neurodiverse conditions like ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or specific learning differences like dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.

All our buildings are fully wheelchair accessible, and we work to put plans and adjustments in place to allow all students to fully engage in student life at BIMM.

Whether you’re looking for a role to build up your creative CV and portfolio or looking for a part-time role during your studies, your college’s is on hand to support you in your search.

They are also primed and ready to support you in creating your CV and cover letter, preparing for interviews and giving advice about how to make the most of your professional experiences.

Our supportive community doesn’t end at our staff – our student community also contains a number of supporting figures there to help you settle in and during your studies. As students themselves, they are full of useful tips, tricks and resources to help you make the most of your BIMM experience.

Student Presidents

Each year, one representative from second or third year is elected to officially represent students at their college.

Dedicated to improving the BIMM student experience, our Student Presidents campaign on the issues that matter most to you.

Health insurance is a legal requirement for all residents in Germany, including students. Some students will automatically be insured under their family’s policy (generally those under 26 years old of German nationality/ residence), or via Europe’s European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) scheme.

You will need a health insurance policy covering the duration of your studies in Germany. It is illegal to not have health insurance coverage, and for non-EU students this can constitute a violation of your visa requirements. Thus, once you receive an acceptance letter, contact a health insurance provider immediately and get yourself insured.

General health insurance information

Depending on which country you are moving to Germany from, your age, your existing health insurance policies in your home country and/ or what your home health insurance covers while you are studying internationally, the options available to you may be variable. Therefore, when looking for private health insurance, make sure that your policy will cover you as a student studying at BIMM University Berlin.

Health insurance options

Public health insurance:

We have agreements with two German public health insurance companies, Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) and Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK).

All students at BIMM University Berlin are eligible for cover by TK or AOK health insurance. BIMM University Berlin students pay the same fees as students at state-accredited universities. Therefore, if you take out health insurance with TK or AOK, you can be reassured that you are receiving comprehensive coverage at a fair price. Current information for students, including monthly fees, can be accessed on TK’s and AOK’s websites.

Techniker Krankenkasse (TK)

Allgemeine Ortskrakenkasse (AOK)

Students are welcome to apply for coverage from other public providers:

BARMER Health Insurance

IKK Classic (site in German)

DAK Health Insurance

Private health insurance:

Insurance brokers are also available to help with arranging health insurance and may be a more suitable option if you have specific requirements. We recommend using Check24’s health insurance comparison tool to review offers.

We recommend the below private health insurance providers who offer commensurate insurance coverage as public health insurance providers:

  • Hanse Merkur
  • Signal Iduna
  • Münchener Verein

Expat health insurance:

Expat health insurance may be a convenient and cost-effective option if you are planning to move to Germany from outside of the EU and require proof of insurance coverage to support your visa application.

Please note that Expat insurance is limited to your first visa and has a maximum term of 5 years. It is therefore not a long-term solution, and we recommend arranging private insurance coverage.

Alternative proofs of health insurance:

Students with European health insurance:

If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a UK-issued Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), you can enquire about additional Travel Health Insurance from the health authority in your country and the possibilities of extending this to cover your studies in Germany. On most occasions, coverage by EHIC is possible for a small number of years and does not cover access to certain types of ongoing treatments to the extent of a German insurer.

We there recommend taking out insurance with a German-based provider who will offer you comprehensive coverage during your stay.

German nationals/ residents with existing health insurance:

Most students with German nationality/ residency, and under 26 years of age, will be covered under their family’s health insurance.

It is advised that students aged 26 years or over apply for public health insurance from one of the above recommended providers.
