BIMM University Berlin delivers future-focused workshops at PEOPLE & CULTURE FESTIVAL 2023

24 November, 2023

Managed by networking organisation Medianet Berlin-Brandenburg, the annual PEOPLE & CULTURE FESTIVAL aims to solve the acute workforce needs of the creative industries. Through discussion panels, workshops and networking, the event connects organisations with the brightest and best creative minds.

The festival is a prime opportunity for us to build and nurture connections connect with the industry, receive direct feedback on our courses, and match our students up with opportunities at some of Berlin’s most exciting creative organisations.

This year, alongside students getting stuck into networking, BIMM University Berlin featured in the festival’s programme. Together with Berlin-based music tech company Ableton, we powered two sessions of a ‘Digital Playground’, and also hosted an interactive workshop on using AI to create a game.

Robert Witoschek, International Campus Dean at BIMM University Berlin, has played a key role in facilitating opportunities through Medianet Berlin-Brandenburg and had this to say:

“It was great to attend the People & Culture Festival for the second year running. The festival is just one of many opportunities we have through Medianet to connect with local creative organisations. As an education institution, it’s vital for us to have this contact as we can support organisations in training the talent of tomorrow. Together, we can close the skills gap that exists in the creative industries – in Berlin and beyond.”

The Digital Playground Experience saw Music Production lecturer and certified Ableton trainer, Sjoerd van der Sanden, become the conductor of an incredible digital orchestra. Using Ableton Link and the Ableton Push 3, groups of eight people – seasoned musicians and complete novices amongst them – came together to collectively create a piece of unique music.

The Digital Playground sessions demonstrated Ableton’s commitment to intuitive design and making production skills accessible to anyone who wishes to explore it.

Can we make a game in 30 minutes using AI? Dean of Creative Technologies Nick Rodriguez shows how

Later in the day, Dean of Creative Technologies, Nick Rodriguez led a fascinating workshop that drew on AI tools such as ChatGPT and Midjourney to create a game. Demonstrating the power of the prompt, Nick showed exactly how AI can assist us in speeding up the creative process, utilising it to develop quick proofs of concept and overcome fear of the blank page.

“I had a great time delivering the workshop, and particularly enjoyed the healthy discussion that it inspired around the ethics of AI. While the games industry has long relied on AI to assist our work, the tool is only becoming more powerful. We, like other creative sectors, have big questions to find the answers to. This is something that we as a university are diving into further through our AI Labs, ensuring that our students are equipped with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the impacts of AI.” — Nick Rodriguez, Dean of Creative Technologies

Following the festival, Jérémy Hoffmann, New Business Project Manager at Medianet Berlin-Brandenburg had this to say:

“We are very pleased that BIMM University Berlin has, once again, supported the PEOPLE & CULTURE FESTIVAL as a partner. Through the more extensive partnership this year with a programmatic presence in the form of the workshop “Can We Make A Game in 30 Minutes using AI?” and the two “Digital Playground Experience” production sessions with Ableton, BIMM University Berlin offered PEOPLE & CULTURE FESTIVAL attendees a hands-on experience that made a significant contribution to the festival. We would like to thank them for this and look forward to continuing our collaboration in 2024.”

It was fantastic to be part of PEOPLE & CULTURE FESTIVAL 2023. It’s great to connect with local creative organisations while also delivering incredible opportunities for our students to gain employment and internships. We look forward to returning for future editions of the festival.
