MetFilm School Berlin’s Jide Tom Akinleminu celebrates festival success

13 November, 2025

MetFilm School Berlin is proud to celebrate the latest achievements of Jide Tom Akinleminu, MA Documentary & Factual course leader, whose cinematography continues to receive international recognition.

This month, two films Jide was involved in as Director of Photography/Cinematographer are set to make their world premieres at two of the most influential documentary festivals in the world.

An Open Field — World Premiere at IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)

An Open Field follows the story of director Teboho Edkins’ younger brother, Max Thabiso Edkins, who was killed when a Boeing 737 MAX crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa. In response to this unimaginable loss, Teboho and his father, producer Don Edkins, travel to the crash site in Ethiopia in search of something tangible amid their grief.

Sons of Detroit — World Premiere at DOC NYC

Directed by Jeremy Xido, Sons of Detroit is a powerful exploration of a city shaped by generational shifts, industrial decline, and the resilience of its people. Through Jide’s observational cinematography, the film traces intimate stories within a Detroit community reckoning with the legacies of segregation, deindustrialisation, and economic transformation.

Showcasing global success from Berlin

These premieres reinforce Jide’s growing international influence and demonstrate the strength of the creative leadership shaping MetFilm School Berlin.

Jide’s broader body of work reflects a long-standing commitment to bold, human-centred storytelling. His previous credits include:

  • No U-Turn – Special Mention, Berlinale Documentary Award (2022)
  • Portrait of a Lone Farmer – African Movie Academy Award and the 3Sat Award for Best Documentary (2014)
  • When a Farm Goes Aflame – Premiered at Berlinale 2021 and African Studies Association Film Prize (2022)

With these two new premieres at IDFA and DOC NYC, Jide continues to cement his position as an influential voice in contemporary documentary filmmaking, all whilst inspiring the next generation of filmmakers here at MetFilm School Berlin.
