MetStudios Berlin hosts third instalment of Game Jam
Earlier this month, MetStudios Berlin hosted its third Game Jam, bringing together Games Design & Development students, Music Production students, and applicants for a week of creativity, collaboration, and hands-on game-making.
Over five days, participants worked in mixed groups to create original games from scratch, supported by lecturers and high-spec creative tech, including digital drawing tablets and game engine tools. Each student in attendance quickly became part of a team and got a real insight into student life at BIMM University Berlin.
The theme of this year’s Game Jam was ‘Oh, God! No!’ which led to the creation of a 2.5D horror game about cheerleaders, a 3D horror game about camping in the forest and escaping from a monster, and a 2D WarioWare-like game with tiny fast-paced challenges.
The opening masterclass was with Nathalie Lawhead (IGF Nuovo Award 2015, A MAZE – Digital Moment Award 2016, Indiecade Interaction Award 2017, MoMA induction 2022 for Everything is Going to Be OK) followed by 1-on-1 tutorials with Nathalie.
There was also a closing masterclass hosted by with Nicolas Guerin (Creative Director at Thunder Lotus,and has worked on Army of Two, Skate, Assassin’s Creed and Watchdogs 2).
Music Production students contributed bespoke audio and sound design, reinforcing the cross-disciplinary spirit that defines our campus culture. Games students valued the chance to work with creatives from different backgrounds, learning from each other’s strengths and skill sets.
By the last day, both groups presented playable prototypes. Between coding sessions, everyone enjoyed pizzas and hangouts.
The Game Jam proved to be an extraordinary success, uniting students, applicants, and lecturers for a weekend filled with creativity, collaboration, and the spirit of innovation that’s core to the BIMM University Berlin experience.
