BIMM Berlin and Hamburg’s 2020 Induction Events

2 October, 2020

Here at BIMM University Berlin and Hamburg, we wasted no time in connecting students directly to the global music industry at our 2020 Induction events. Students were treated to a hybrid programme of activities, with plenty of opportunities to meet their fellow students, get acquainted with tutors, and meet potential new bandmates. Each of the events were carefully designed to provide students with the best possible start at BIMM University Berlin.

BIMM University Berlin Germany has had its fair share of exciting happenings recently – from performances by BIMM Berlin’s very own The Usual Boys and BIMM Hamburg’s Deer Anna to walking tours of students’ new neighbourhoods and relaxing Pilates classes to help them unwind.

Masterclass with Mike Joyce of The Smiths

At both Induction events, students were also treated to an exclusive Q&A with The Smiths’ Mike Joyce, where he shared helpful advice and stories from his days in one of music’s most influential bands. Throughout the rest of their studies with us, students will experience Masterclass sessions, which take place weekly at both campuses. These will include demonstrations, Q&A sessions and even surprise live performances from global industry icons, current chart-toppers, all from big names across the music industry.

“The interview with Mike Joyce was a real highlight of both college events”, says College Principal Anna Marks. “It was fantastic to have him to tell us about his experiences as a part of legendary and influential acts over the years – and the importance of being open to opportunities and being experimental in your approach to your profession and passion.”

“The performances from students who have completed their degrees with us were also terrific. We look forward to seeing the work that emerges from our incoming students and celebrating the creative and music industry ideas that they will bring to our college community. We also want to thank the student mentors and Student Association representatives for their presence.”

“We hope that our events have inspired our new students to make the most of their journey at BIMM University Berlin over the next three years.”

We caught up with scholarship winners Bleona and Eleanor to get their lowdown on BIMM Berlin and BIMM Hamburg’s induction events.

BIMM University Berlin Induction 2020

Eleanor Andristplourde, Scholarship Winner at BIMM University Berlin, dived headfirst into networking with her fellow students and even set up a skills exchange.

“This past week was filled with fun events to do in person, while socially distanced, and at home. My favourite part of Induction Week was the tandem language exchange.”

“We not only had the opportunity to make new friends but also learn new skills! My partner and I will be exchanging ukelele lessons for German study sessions.”

Here’s what College Principal Anna Marks had to say about the exciting event and her highlights:

“We were so happy to welcome our new students in person at the Induction event at Cassiopeia on Thursday. We were delighted to meet so many first-year students in the RAW area, which they will have the opportunity to explore over the coming years. We were also very happy that the sun continued to shine so that we could enjoy the space with the backdrop of the House of Music, where classes commence this week.”

BIMM University Berlin Hamburg Induction 2020

BIMM Hamburg’s Scholarship Winner Bleona Ramadani gave us the rundown of her favourite moments during the eventful Freshers’ and Induction Week, which included a special Beatles tour created especially for our students:

“Pilates, meditation, art… these and many more activities were offered to us new students for our Freshman Week at BIMM University Berlin. We still had the opportunity to meet our new uni colleagues and share new experiences with them despite COVID-19.”

“Whilst most of the activities were online via Zoom, we also had face-to-face activities, like the unique Beatles Tour at the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. We got to stroll down to the different clubs where the Beatles had played a dozen shows before blowing up, and learning more about the city BIMM calls home!”

“We also had our Induction event on Friday, where two bands from BIMM University Berlin Hamburg played their songs exclusively for us new students.”

“We got an idea of what is ahead of us, what we should expect during our studies, and lots more!”

“We also took part in a once-in-a-lifetime Masterclass with none other than Mike Joyce, the ex-drummer of the legendary band The Smiths! He gave us an insight into his life in the music industry, his ups and downs, and what we should know regarding our future and following our dreams. We all left the venue feeling inspired and more motivated, ready to fully kick off the studies!”

College Principal Anna Marks was delighted to welcome students at the inspiring event:

“We were delighted to meet all of our new students, and welcome them to BIMM University Berlin Hamburg in the Bahnhof St. Pauli venue ahead of their classes commencing this week. The performances from our second-year students were also terrific. We feel very proud of all that they have accomplished, and look forward to being a part of our new students’ journeys and their new lives here at BIMM University Berlin.”
