“Sorry about the name drops”: Director Tim Pope’s exclusive masterclass at BIMM University Berlin

16 May, 2022

Couldn’t make it to our exclusive masterclass with legendary director and BIMM University Berlin patron Tim Pope? Have no fear: we’re here to recap everything you missed.

Tim Pope’s work is nothing short of legendary. You just have to look at the incredible range of artists he has worked with to see that. From working with David Bowie and Iggy Pop to The Cure and Soft Cell, Tim’s music videos are amongst some of the most influential since the birth of MTV.

With the opening of our Screen & Film Faculty adding to our flourishing industry-led music courses, there was truly no better person than Tim to become patron.

“Tim is the perfect representation of collaboration across the creative industries,” said Deputy College Principal (Screen & Film Faculty) Alex Hobden. “He is someone that works across music, film and the space in between, and that is what we are so excited to develop with our Screen & Film Faculty.”

Tim’s exclusive masterclass

Following the announcement of Tim’s patronage at BIMM University Berlin, we couldn’t wait to get the man on the ground. For the first time in his patronage, Tim visited our state-of-the-art music and film facilities before giving his first masterclass.

“I’ve got to say, I am super impressed, What an amazing place to study and start your career! I only wish my own film school had been so good!”

– Tim Pope, during his visit to BIMM University Berlin’s music and film facilities

Later that day, Tim took the stage at Noisy, our neighbours in House of Music, to give his first masterclass. With a full room of current and prospective BIMM University Berlin students from our Berlin and Hamburg colleges, staff and members of the public, Tim shared anecdotes and insights from his career to date. From his introduction to David Bowie by Iggy Pop and a guide on how to flip a room 360°, Tim’s masterclass had plenty of wisdom for musicians and filmmakers alike.

Just like at every BIMM University Berlin masterclass, the audience had the opportunity to ask Tim questions. In this Q&A session, he shared insight into his own creative process, his thoughts on TikTok and gave advice for creative music videos on a budget.

“I particularly enjoyed the Q&A, and being able to hang out afterwards to continue conversations and answer more questions,” Tim said. “I think the event was a great success, and I am very happy to perform my role as patron of BIMM University Berlin and to bring what is, hopefully, a wealth of experience.”

Tim’s patronage going forwards

This masterclass represents just the start of Tim’s patronage at BIMM University Berlin.

If you’ve been following the development of Tim’s patronage closely, you will already know that Tim will select one of our BA (Hons) Filmmaking applicants to receive a scholarship in his name. The Tim Pope Filmmaking Scholarship will cover one Filmmaking student’s full tuition over the course of their studies. As well as this, the recipient will gain invaluable insight and wisdom from Tim through regular one-to-one mentoring sessions.

If this is the first you’re hearing of this, then be quick! Applications for the scholarship close on 15th July 2022. To find out more about this incredible scholarship, including details on how to apply and who is eligible, click here.

Beyond this incredible financial aid, visits from Tim will become a regular affair at BIMM University Berlin. Students participating in the Music Video module will enjoy unparalleled expertise during his guest lecture appearances. Tim will also provide further masterclasses and practical workshops throughout the academic year, which will be open to all students from across the BIMM University Berlin community.

“Working with Tim on outlining his patronage with us has been so exciting, He is so passionate about supporting the next generation of creatives and wants to be as involved as possible. Having access to mentorship from Tim is an opportunity that certainly doesn’t come by every day, so I urge students to make the most of it!”

– Alex Hobden, Deputy College Principal (Screen & Film Faculty)

Tim’s first masterclass was a fantastic first impression of what’s to come. We can’t wait to see how our relationship with Tim continues to develop and to see the tangible impact of his industry knowledge on students studying with us.
