Top tips for building your brand with Debbie Knox-Hewson
Debbie Knox-Hewson is a professional session and touring drummer, educator and clinician whose career has taken her all around the world. After studying at BIMM Music Institute Brighton, she went straight into high-level performance, including touring with Charli XCX and English rock band James, and appearing on major stages such as Glastonbury Festival, Lollapalooza and Reading & Leeds Festival.
She’s also involved in songwriting and production (notably with her band Nasty Cherry and Honeyblood), and works as a drum educator and clinician for major brands.
As an online tutor for BIMM Berlin, she brings this real-world industry experience straight into her teaching, meaning that students benefit not just from theory, but from a living, working practitioner who has lots of experience of international touring and session work.
Here are Debbie’s go-to tips for building your brand, whether you’re a musician, creator, or part of the music industry:
Authenticity always wins
“Make sure it’s something that really lands with you…you’ll feel motivated to post more if it feels really true to yourself.”
If your brand reflects you, your values, interests, aesthetic, and voice, it won’t feel like a chore to show up. Debbie emphasises that when you’re aligned internally, posting content and creating new music becomes easier and more sustainable.
Consistency (without burning out)
“Consistency doesn’t have to mean posting all the time, every day.”
Debbie’s method: set aside one hour per week to think about what you want to share and queue those posts ahead of time. Instead of forcing daily posts, find a manageable rhythm that works for you.
Using scheduling tools or apps to plan content can remove pressure and keep your brand alive and visible.
Why these two together matter
“Authenticity and consistency lead to meaningful engagement.”
When what you share is genuine and you show up consistently, you build trust and a clear sense of identity with your audience. Debbie’s journey – from self-taught drummer to touring professional, educator, and producer – shows that authenticity and dedication go hand in hand, and that when you stay true to yourself, opportunities follow.
