MA student secures scholarship for prestigious Berlin Opera Academy

26 March, 2024

Deborah Marchini is a current MA Popular Music Practice student at BIMM University Berlin. After moving to Berlin from Brazil for her master’s studies, Deborah has now successfully secured a place as a Festival Singer on the 2024 Berlin Opera Academy’s summer training programme.

Alongside being accepted for the Berlin Opera Academy‘s programme, she was also awarded the Elisavet Chatzivasileiou Memorial Scholarship.

About the Berlin Opera Academy summer programme

Held each summer, the Berlin Opera Academy offers emerging opera singers and musicians intensive professional training. During the programme, Deborah will have access to specialist opera workshops and have the opportunity to complete mock auditions with agents.

Through these connections, Deborah has the chance to secure future auditions for solo and chorus roles in opera houses across Germany.

At the end of her training, Deborah will also participate in Berlin’s summer Opera Festival as part of the cast of Puccini’s Suor Angelica.

“Being accepted means so much to me! It will be the first time that I’ll perform in a full opera production here in Germany. The program me will also give me a taste of professional singing life in Europe, with a variety of different performance opportunities.”

To apply for the role, Deborah had to submit an unedited video recording in which she performed two opera arias.

“I actually recorded the videos at BIMM in collaboration with another master’s student, Brooklyn Duffie. She accompanied me on the piano.”

We warmly congratulate Deborah on her success with the training programme and look forward to following her career as it progresses.
