Moses Schneider leads workshop at Music Faculty Day 2025
For the second year running, our School of Music, BIMM Music Institute Berlin, celebrated a day full of workshops and masterclasses for Music Faculty Day. The day’s programme, which featured appearances from top industry professionals, gave students the opportunity to explore key music industry topics in depth through extended three-hour workshops.
Students from across our music courses took part in the workshops, further developing their knowledge through highly specialised topics.
Using real drums to create a hip-hop beat with Moses Schneider
We were delighted to welcome Moses Schneider back to guide our students through a highly technical workshop on using real drums to create beats.
Moses Schneider is one of Germany’s most important producers. Best known for his work with major German acts such as Tocotronic, Beatsteaks and AnnenyMayKantereit, Moses has been described as the “Albert Einstein of live recordings” by Strokes producer Gordon Raphael. Alongside his production work, Moses is also the author of The Alternate Handbook (or How to Pimp Your Practice Room).
With fewer than 15 slots available, students took to Studio 1 to work with Moses. Starting off with just a hip-hop vocal stem, Moses tasked the students to create a drum beat that would work with the track. For this, they mic’d up a drum kit before one of our students played a beat that would be the basis of the track.
Back in the studio, Moses shared his process on manipulating the recording of the live drums to create beats that sound totally unique, creating sounds and textures that can only be achieved through starting off with live instruments as the foundation.
Securing cash flow as a musician in the streaming age with Laura Lee
Fresh off the back of her appearance at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Laura Lee gave a three-hour workshop all about how our students can structure their work to make a consistent income as musicians.
As a member of the bands Gurrs and Laura Lee & The Jettes, Laura shot to critical acclaim in 2016 with the release of the Gurrs’ album In My Head. Having extensively toured Europe and with a live session for BBC Radio 1 from Maida Vale to her name, Laura gave students a framework for setting realistic financial goals and a pathway to achieve them.
As part of this, the session explored how students can diversify their income: from making money through streaming to collaborating with cultural institutions. Overall, the session aimed to address common obstacles musicians face through developing practical solutions towards building a financially successful music career.
Soundscapes created by movement: exploring the technology with Sjoerd van der Sanden
Music Production lecturer Sjoerd van der Sanden led a highly interdisciplinary workshop as part of the Music Faculty Day programme.
The session kicked off with a live performance from Strich & Rausch, which saw a sound artist create a live soundscape based on a painter’s sounds and movements.
The rest of the workshop then dove into the aesthetics and technicalities of how to work with movement and live sound. Together with Sjoerd, students worked with a range of sensors and microphones to explore techniques for how these setups can create sound.
Sound & Synthesis: composing original pieces with Alec Storey
This year, we offered one online session as part of the Music Faculty Day programme, which was available to our applicants based outside Berlin.
This session, led by Music Production lecturer Alec Storey, was all about crafting unique ambient textures and experimental soundscapes using synthesisers and other creative production techniques. Within the session, Alec introduced participants to a range of different synthesisers, offering an immersive session about composing original pieces.
Unlocking the power of social media: a masterclass on digital marketing
The final session of the day was with Julia Graul, ACT Music & Vision’s Digital Marketing Manager. A specialist in social media strategy, artist branding and audience engagement, she brought students the knowledge they need to craft an authentic artist brand and loyal community through social media.
By the end of the session, each student left with actionable tools and strategic frameworks to navigate the digital landscape with confidence, whether as an artist, manager or aspiring music entrepreneur.
