Music Faculty Day 2024

13 May, 2024

In April, students from our music courses got stuck into our inaugural Music Faculty Day (MFD). MFD expanded on our usual masterclass programme, offering six incredible masterclasses that covered a diverse range of topics from studio mixing to sound design for video games.

“Music Faculty Day offered students a jam-packed programme of masterclasses that further our mission to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the music industry. Led by industry professionals, each session was extremely enriching and filled with up-to-the-minute industry knowledge.”

Luisa Lerma, Head of School – Music

Mixing masterclass

Starting bright and early, two of our studios were packed out for a highly popular studio mixing masterclass with Fabio Buemi and Darius Karrenberg from the Music Production team.

This practical, hands-on masterclass gave students from Music Production and beyond the opportunity to discover the secrets of mixing for studio recordings.

Conquering stage fright

Even the most experienced performers encounter some anxiety while performing on stage. This two-hour masterclass, led by lecturer Sjoerd van der Sanden, equipped students with strategies to overcome on-stage nerves.

Audio design for video games

Just like for film and TV, there’s a growing desire for excellent music and sound in the gaming industry. With video games generating billions of euros in revenue worldwide, there are more and more exciting ways for musicians to get involved in the gaming industry.

Markus Zierhofer, Composer and CEO at Berlin-based studio Audio Creatures, introduced students to his work and provided an overview of the various careers within game music and audio.

What’s happened in the music business so far this year?

If anyone’s got their finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the music business, it’s Joe Sparrow, BIMM Berlin Music Business lecturer and Editor at Music Ally.

Having just recently put together Music Ally’s latest quarterly report on the state of music streaming in 2024, Joe’s masterclass dived deep into the music industry’s evolving landscape. Topics included AI in music, plus an overview of what DSPs (Digital Service Providers) are up to.

Building a brand as an artist

How do I stand out from the crowd as an artist? This very question was addressed by independent consultant for artists, brands and music Andreas Weckenbrock in his masterclass. Covering different strategies ranging from PR to TikTok, this 90-minute session examined why it is so important to have a clear and cohesive brand strategy as an artist.

Trying out the latest Ableton products

Following on from the recent announcement that BIMM University Berlin has achieved Ableton Certified Trainer status, we were delighted to welcome Ableton Certified Trainer, producer and artist Cee for an inspiring masterclass.

Ableton Certified Trainer Cee leads his masterclass at BIMM University Berlin. He talks students through Ableton Live and the Push 3.

This session explored Cee’s creative workflow, and students also got to try out two of Ableton’s latest products: Ableton Live 12 and the Push 3.

We would like to give a huge thank you to all our masterclass guests for making our inaugural Music Faculty Day one to remember.
