Another Monday, and that means it’s time for a brand new Track of the Week.
Take a listen to the debut single from BIMM Manchester’s Magdalen. This is ‘Fireworks’.
What inspired you when writing this track?
Fireworks came about because I wanted to write a song about my generation inspired by the people around me. It’s about being young and seeking thrills and new experiences and how that can lead to self-destruction but also a lot of joy, naive wonder and connection with others. So it’s basically about all the contradictions that come with being my age and figuring life out for the first time.
Were there any particular music influences while you were writing?
I’m trying not to look at other musicians as direct influences so I can truly follow my own path and I feel like I really found my own sound in a new way while making this track. But I’m always inspired by really great anthemic pop songs and I feel like this song is the closest I’ve ever got to writing a song like this.
Is there anything you do to try and make your music stand out?
The main thing I’ve done to make my music stand out is work on my sound and try to make it distinctive and unique. I love music from so many different styles. I love pop, rap music and experimental music so I try to create a world where these styles can all influence my music in a congruent way.
How did your songwriting process work?
I usually take ages writing songs. I’ll have bits of hooks and beats and then I’ll gradually build a song from them but I wrote this song really quickly. I just decided I wanted to write the song and what I wanted to say and then sat at a keyboard and wrote it.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Dreamy, homemade pop
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
I’ve really found my sound since coming to BIMM. Honestly, there aren’t a lot of people around who make pop music like I do, so that’s really helped me to define my identity as an artist, as I can see what I’m making as separate from most people’s music world. There’s also been some really helpful input from tutors and masterclasses which have given me real guidance and most importantly, affirmation about the path I am following.
What’s your favourite thing about BIMM?
The amount of knowledge and expertise available from tutors. I like to be able to work independently and make everything myself, so it’s really good for me to be able to get help from tutors whenever I am uncertain about aspects of my career and artistry.
Anything exciting coming up you can share?
The ‘Fireworks’ music video is coming out very soon. Look out for more details.
