The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back: Casualties

Track of the Week

This weeks Track of the Week, Casualties comes from BIMM Dublin band, The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back.

You can check out the video below, and find out a little more about what the band are all about in our short interview.

What was the inspiration behind your track?

The inspiration was the globalisation of American culture through celebrities, fashion, tv, social media and every other aspect of life that is fed to us through screens.

What did your songwriting process involve?

The songwriting process for this was one of the most natural things ever for us, we started with one riff and jammed out for about ten minutes and all of a sudden we had a song. I wrote a bunch of lyrics and then when we had a demo done, brought them to the rest of the guys, knocked a few things around, chopped some, added some new ones and what came out was a so that represented us better than anything else we had ever done in the past.

What things do you do differently to other bands?

I think we do a lot of things different, not necessarily musically, I don’t think we’ve reinvented the wheel, we just write what we want to hear. As a band, we constantly provide our fans with new content, our social media (ironically considering the basis of the song we just released) is one of our strongest points. And live, I mean, when we came onto the scene, it was full of bands that stood still, looking at their instruments to make sure every note was perfect. We got up their and threw ourselves around the place, we’d headbang into the crowds faces. One time while playing a gig we had so many people climb on stage that the sound engineer cut everything off and said we were done unless everyone got off stage!

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Aggressive, energetic, stompy

Have you channelled any artist in particular on this track?

For this one there’s a mix of things, Slipknot, Korn, While She Sleeps, even friends of ours from Celbridge (Ireland) Dead Label have had an influence in our sound.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

Well I met our singer Stephen there, so that’s a pretty big one. Besides that, it really helped me figure out what it meant to be in a band, just how much effort goes into planning everything, so far in advance especially. It also made me realise that the best music you can make is the music you want to hear, like I said. I can always point out the one guy on stage that doesn’t actually like the songs they’re playing, they’re enjoying themselves. If you’re not writing the music you want to hear you’re writing the wrong music.

What’s the best bit of music advice you’ve been given?

“Stop thinking about it so much”. There’s this idea of ‘the zone’ in music when you’re playing everything perfectly but you’re not even concentrating on it, it’s coming naturally. I think that’s true about every aspect of performance, do what feels natural when performing, if you wanna dance, then dance, if you wanna put your foot through the stage, then you better start stomping, hard.
